Abstract

For researchers: Did you know that when you leave university you will no longer have easy access to most of your favorite journals from your laptop or phone? In fact you won’t be able to read the majority of the world's scholarly information, because you will no longer be covered by Memorial's multi-million dollar journal subscriptions. Even though research and researchers are mostly funded out of taxpayer money, their research output is owned by commercial journal publishers who sell it back to the university at a tidy profit. Sound unfair? Thousands of other students agree. Come to this workshop to find out more about Open Access, and be part of a student movement that is transforming the way that scholars share information. For authors: Planning to publish soon? Do you know your intellectual property rights? Do you know that most scholarly journals will ask you to give up those rights in perpetuity? Open Access publishers let you retain rights over your work, and give you the ability to share your work as broadly as you want, with whomever you want. Why publish in a journal that hardly anyone has the right to read, when your work could be read by the whole world? Come to this workshop to find out more about Open Access, and be part of a student movement that is transforming the way that scholars share information.
