Abstract

This case study highlights a collaborative international project that involved farmers in Padilla, Bolivia, the City of Corner Brook, and international business students at Grenfell Campus. In 2011 the City of Corner Brook was selected by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to participate in their Municipal Partners in Economic Development (MPED) program. The City of Corner Brook was matched with the municipality of Padilla, Bolivia. Padilla is a small rural community located in the southeast part of the country. It is a farming community that was established in 1583 and its population is made up of aboriginal descent. The project’s aim is to seek opportunities that would contribute to local economic development of the area. Representatives of the City of Corner Brook made their first visit to Padilla in September, 2011. Representatives of the town of Padilla visited Corner Brook in the winter of 2012, followed by a second visit from City of Corner Brook officials to Padilla in the summer of 2012. One entrepreneurial project that was identified was to explore the export market for peanuts that are grown in the area. As part of their international business course requirements, a group of students became involved in the fall of 2012 to assess the export opportunities.
