Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to determine the van Hiele levels and proof-writing achievement of grade 10 students in Newfoundland. Another aspect of the study was to determine the relationship between students' van Hiele levels and their proof-writing achievement. Other concerns of this study included trying to determine any sex-related differences between van Hiele levels and proof-writing achievement. -- The sample consisted of 201 students on the Avalon Peninsula in the province of Newfoundland. Each student was administered two tests. One test attempted to determine the students' van Hiele level; the other test was given to determine the students' proof-writing achievement. The tests were administered over a two-week period in latter part of May, 1983. -- The average van Hiele level was found to be 2.29 and 1.45 using the 3 of 5 and 4 of 5 criteria respectively for the classical van Hiele theory. The average van Hiele levels for the modified van Hiele theory were found to be 2.22 and 1.45 using the 3 of 5 and 4 of 5 criteria respectively. -- A significant relationship was found between the students' assigned van Hiele levels and their proof-writing achievement. No sex-related differences were found between students' van Hiele levels and their proof-writing achievement.
