Abstract

This article attempts to interpret the layers of meaning embedded in the original printer's symbol created by Richard Outram and Barbara Howard to identify items published in their extraordinary letterpress publishing house, The Gauntlet Press. The symbol, reproduced in the text of the article, is shown to embrace a vision, a manifesto and a pledge to pursue both within the ancient artistic and poetic tradition of the illuminated book.
