Abstract

The internship component of the Master of Education was completed in Stephenville, Newfoundland with School District #4. The internship report consists of a placement component and a research component. The placement component of the report provides an overview of the internship goals and a description of the placement setting, as well as descriptions of the various activities in which the intern was involved during the placement. -- The research component examines students' perceptions on the effects of using rewards as a means of motivation. Twelve grade six students volunteered to be audio-tapped during interviews which addressed their feelings and perceptions toward the use of rewards as incentives to motivate students in regards to their studies. Findings indicated a mixture of feelings pertaining to rewards. Some students indicated that rewards are a useful and positive means of motivation, while others suggested that the use of rewards have negative consequences and may discourage students from studying. Relevance of the findings are discussed as well as limitations of the research.
