Abstract

This thesis is an exploration of the graphic novel Persépolis, written and drawn by Marjane Satrapi from 2000 to 2003. The work is deconstructed from different perspectives relating to Marxist, feminist, and postcolonial theory. In addition, psychoanalysis and semiotics provides supplementary interpretations of the text and a strong foundation for the literary study of Persépolis. The graphic novel is fundamentally different from the traditional novel in its deliberate use of images. Explicitly, it is a multi-dimensional, polyphonic and hybrid form. This paper explores subjects such as revolution, trauma, and literary schizophrenia. At the focus are the implications of theories proposed by Edward Saïd on Orientalism and Pierre Bourdieau on distinction and how they can relate to this text. The aim of this thesis is to critically engage in current academic research on Persépolis, and present themes not yet explored within Satrapi’s work.
