Abstract
The purpose of this study was to first determine the availability of health status monitoring models within the community health arena. An assessment was then made as to the availability, quality and accessibility of existing health and social indicator data sources relevant to Labrador Inuit. To investigate the quality and practicality of the data sources, a conceptual and analytical framework was developed from a review of the concepts of measurement, measurement tools and health status indicator selection. Following this investigative process, a data collection model was proposed that could be used over time within the region of interest, utilizing components of the data and information sources inventory. -- The evidence from this thesis indicates that a great deal of information exists about the population of concern. This information can be used to measure health status. As well, a number of excellent tools have been developed to measure population health; one of these tools can be adapted to fit regional needs at this time. The thesis concludes by making a number of recommendations for supporting the development of a comprehensive health status monitoring instrument for a small population.
