Abstract

The Draft Provincial Art Curriculum Guide for Grades 7, 8 and 9 has been reviewed through the eyes of the art teachers for its usefulness in the implementation of Newfoundland and Labrador Art Programs. -- The teachers included in the survey, (N=84) and in the interviews, (N=2) revealed that the provincial guide has limited utility for teachers with little background in art working in adverse conditions where there are few resources to facilitate implementation. The design of art curriculum guides becomes even more important under these circumstances since teachers will have little else available to help them with implementation. -- Implementation research can assist art education by identifying key factors such as structural constraints, preparation time and art resources. Art co-ordinators, consultants and specialists will need to orient their curriculum guides to the realities faced by Newfoundland teachers in remote areas with limited art backgrounds and resources to facilitate implementation.
