Abstract
The Kahnawake Schools Diabetes Prevention Project (KSDPP) is a community-owned health promotion project in Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, Quebec, Canada. As a participatory research partnership between community and university researchers, it has worked with elementary schools since 1994 in designing, delivering and evaluating school-based health promotion interventions for grades 1-6. From 2005-2009, a new school-based nutrition policy was collaboratively developed by a coalition of stakeholders including parents/guardians, teachers, school administrators, community hospital dietitians, and KSDPP staff. It was successfully implemented in the 2009-10 school year. In 2011-12, these stakeholder groups and researchers collaborated to develop and implement a supporting physical activity (PA) policy using baseline data collected from grades 1-6 and PA policy literature. Data included SHAPES administrator questionnaire; PA photovoice with grades 5-6; PAIR survey with grades 4-6, 7-day recall with all grades; and adult/stakeholder focus groups. The policy was implemented in 2012, with evaluation to follow in 2013. The next phase of the PA policy, involves a School Travel Planning (STP) Committee, which will undertake an environmental scan for initiating a program of active transportation (AT) to school – walking and cycling. Findings will inform stakeholders of current travel behaviours, facilitators and barriers to AT, and inform an action plan for school AT implementation. The overall aims of this project are to engage and empower community stakeholders; develop and implement the PA component of a wellness policy in an elementary school setting; evaluate facilitators and barriers to implementation; and disseminate findings to other stakeholders within and outside the community. This presentation will highlight 1) how stakeholders and researchers partnered to formulate a PA policy; 2) how stakeholders have valued and used baseline results in this formulation; 3) content of the resulting policy; 4) promotional and implementation efforts and challenges; and 5) implications for research and practice.
