Abstract
Since the Fall of 2011, York University’s Knowledge Mobilization Unit has been offering Social Media Learning Sessions to York faculty members, research staff, graduate students and community partners. These sessions introduce a number of commonly used social media, e.g. Twitter, Wordpress, Facebook, SlideShare, Delicious, etc., and allow for hands-on learning so that participants can get comfortable using the tools in a supported environment. The sessions also instruct participants on how social media can be used in a research environment to: 1. Connect with other researchers or community partners working in similar areas of interest; 2. Disseminate knowledge and research in an iterative and interactive way; 3. Build communities for partnerships, collaboration and sharing; 4. Get academic and community-based research into the hands of people who can use it. This session will provide an overview of the Social Media Learning Sessions, as well as address the question, “Do social media have a critical function in the mobilization and dissemination of knowledge?” by showing examples of how social media have been used to share research expertise and findings to a wider audience.
