Abstract

The Farm to Fork project began with a simple question: in a culture that throws away upwards of 40% of all foodstuffs, how do we connect the people who have viable food to give to those who need it most? While food security remains a world-wide concern, we present a local open-source solution borne of a community engaged classroom at the University of Guelph. This project is the result of the collaboration of several community groups, the University of Guelph's Institute for Community Engaged Scholarship and the Research Shop, as well as the School of Computer Science, and the dedication and hard work of thirty engaged computer science students. The presentation will be divided into three major sections as described below. Part 1: The presentation will begin with a review of the early stages of the project, several months before the students first stepped into the classroom. This will include a formal description of the issue of food security and its major drivers in the city of Guelph, Ontario, as well as a brief description of the various community groups on the front line. Part 2: The presentation will transition to a description of the course, its pedagogical goals, and the standard template used by previous instructors. These will form the basis of a brief discussion linking pedagogical goals to community needs. Benefits to both community and students will be highlighted. Part 3: The presentation will conclude with a description and presentation of the Farm2Fork website. Challenges and successes will be outlined at the level of the community, the instructor, and the student. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of future versions of the website.
