Abstract

The initial goal of this project was to document the Archaic Period occupation (9,500 to 2,500 B.P.) at Gaspereau Lake, Kings County, Nova Scotia. After completion of an archaeological survey along its shores and an analysis of several private collections containing archaeological materials, the scope of the project was expanded to include the entire prehistoric occupational sequence for the Gaspereau Lake. -- The information amassed from survey and collection analysis documents a continuous occupational sequence for Gaserpeau Lake, from the Paleoindian Period (11,000 to 9,500 B.P.) to Historic times. Furthermore, additional analysis of site locations has revealed the preference for specific areas along the lake shore. Overall, it appears that site were placed according to their proximity to natural resources and, especially for easy access to seasonal anadromous fish runs.
