Abstract

Jeanne d’Arc Formation reservoir sandstone intervals from the Terra Nova oil field, Jeanne d’Arc basin, offshore Newfoundland, yield repeatable Neoarchean-Mesozoic detrital zircon age populations and imply provenance from the Newfoundland Appalachians and Canadian Shield. Tithonian-Berriasian maximum depositional ages are proposed based on ~145 Ma detrital zircon populations in nine sandstone samples from three Terra Nova wells. Mesozoic detrital zircon grains yield chondritic to superchondritic Hf isotope compositions and suggest that the Jeanne d’Arc Formation was deposited during mantle-derived, but crustally contaminated, syn-rift volcanism. The U-Pb-Hf results define a new reference frame for Jeanne d’Arc basin strata in the Grand Banks and provide opportunities to investigate correlations with deep-water reservoir units along the Atlantic Canadian margin. Zircon U-Pb data from the frontier Mizzen field compare favorably with the Jeanne d’Arc Formation results and suggest Tithonian-Berriasian continuity between Jeanne d’Arc and Flemish Pass basin reservoir units.
