Abstract

This study was conducted on the undergraduate residence halls of Paton College. The study dealt with the prefect and student perception of the ideal and actual role of the prefect in the residence halls. -- Questionnaires were devised by the writer to solicit the perceptions of ideal and actual role. The total population of prefects, fifty, and a sample of two hundred students were given the questionnaires. Thirty-five prefects and one hundred and thirty-five students completed both questionnaires. -- The data was computer analyzed using a multivariate program and areas of significant difference occurred between student and prefect perception, male and female perception and ideal and actual role. -- Ideal and actual role were not perceived to the same degree; more emphasis was placed on ideal role by both prefects and students. Also, prefects placed more emphasis on both the ideal and actual role than did the students. -- The female perception of discipline in the actual role questionnaire was significantly higher than that of the males. In the ideal role questionnaire females again scored significantly higher than males but on the counseling role category. -- From the data conclusions and recommendations were drawn which could act as a guide in improving the prefect system in Paton College.
