Abstract

Long before Feist made the song her own, Sea Lion Woman was recorded in the field by Herbert Halpert, founder of Memorial's Department of Folklore. This workshop explores an audio history of the song with Dr. Philip Hiscock (Folklore), who wexamines the impact of Halpert’s work, along with librarians Patrick Warner and Dr. Dianne Keeping, who highlight the hidden gems of Halpert’s private collection, said to be “one of the finest personal folklore libraries in the world.”
