Abstract

All curriculum materials involving the teaching of language arts at the junior high level in the schools of Newfoundland and Labrador were surveyed. All materials related to metaphor and the instruction of metaphor were studied, and certain conclusions were drawn. -- First, there is a distinct lack of organization of materials related to metaphor. Second, no attempt is made in any of the texts to provide a sequential development of instructional materials. Third, since most material is found in anthologies devoted to a number of topics, the consequence is that treatment of the topic is often superficial and repetitive. -- These conclusions prompted the author to construct two units of lesson plans which were subsequently taught in two separate grade nine academic classes. The majority of the exercises were based upon ideas found in the research literature. Having assessed these lessons the author developed a final unit in metaphor which could be offered to grade nine students.
